Apprenticeship Careers


A rewarding career awaits you as a Local 704 Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice.  We will train you on all aspects of the Sprinkler Fitting Industry.  This life and property saving industry is of vital importance to everyone throughout Detroit and our surrounding counties of jurisdiction. 

You will go through 7,780 hours of On the Job Training coupled with 720 hours of "in the classroom" training:  Throughout your apprenticeship you will be employed by signatory contractors to achieve your on-the-job hours.  There you will work under direct supervision of 704 journeyworkers.

You will be taught to:

  • Apply skills learned in the classroom to the field.
  • Delve deeper into installation codes.
  • Fire protection valves
  • Fire pumps
  • Backflow installation and testing w/Certification
  • Solder and Braze training
  • Oxy-acetylene
  • Light welding
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • CPR/AED Certification

Application Process


Applications are accepted year-round.  To apply, please visit the Sprinkler Fitters Local 704 Union Hall between 9am and 3pm daily.  Once you apply, you will be placed on a list to be notified of the next Apprenticeship Exam.  Upon successful completion of the exam, you will then be called in for an interview.  Upon successful acceptance by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee you will be place onto a list to begin your apprenticeship.  The application process generally can take anywhere from 2 months to a year to actually begin your on-the-job and in-the-classroom hours.
